Metaphysical Traces

The works in this series are traces of humanity, paths of hope, departures, places that bear witness to stories, absences, interpretations of our times. Known lands and at the same time imagined ones. They are not conventional cartographies, but metaphysical mappings: surfaces that enclose fragments of time, matter, and memory, in a continuous search for balance between reality and vision.

I chose the square as a form to represent unity, the human being but also the urban conglomerates that inhabit my maps, both for its ancient meaning of protection, order, and stability, and for its association with concepts such as home and city. Like M. C. Escher used the square in his works rich with visionary geometries that evoked absurd and fantastical worlds, I too wish to recreate wide fields where dense, intricate textures alternate with empty and silent areas that leave space for interpretation.

This series is inspired by the idea of the map as a fragile trace of time and memory, which Mark Bradford also employs to recreate urban places in Los Angeles through found materials and scraps. In a present where, thanks to Google Maps, maps have returned to our everyday life, Metaphisical Traces investigates what remains invisible: inner places, submerged geographies, emotional coordinates.

Not to find orientation, but to get lost — or perhaps, to begin searching.
