SHELLS. Not just for a house by the sea

When an artwork evokes the sea, the association is almost automatic: a house on the coast, a boutique hotel, a yacht interior.
But is that really the only possible setting?
When I first started working with shells, I wasn’t interested in bringing the sea into a room.
I was interested in their structure and the marks left by time.
The spiral. The grooves. The weathered surfaces. The repetition of forms.
These observations led to two very different interpretations.
In Materia in circolo, I isolated the shell’s concentric movement and translated it into engraved lines.

In La danza delle conchiglie, I did almost the opposite: I multiplied the form until it became rhythm.

Two interpretations of the same natural element.
I can imagine these works in residential, hospitality and beauty & wellness projects, not necessarily connected to the sea.
Because the subject matters, but it isn’t the only element I consider when thinking about an artwork within a space.
There is light, materials, colour and proportion. And the way the surface of the artwork responds to its surroundings.
It is the balance between these elements that I look for when creating with a space in mind.
